Perfection: Six Word Fridays

by Belinda Munoz on July 30, 2010

I wrote a post about perfection early in my blogging career.  I equate perfection to Brigadoon (or Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory), though I think it’s even more imaginary.  You can find it here.

My take on perfection hasn’t changed.  The funny thing is, I’m still so fascinated with the subject so I’m exploring it again, this time with a little more levity.

Plump pre-school cheeks, hard to resist
Those smiling eyes, a touch Irish
Little jam hands, reaching, grabbing, hugging
Parents don’t wear white, good policy

Tiny socks, damp hair, warm jammies
“Can you tell me another story?”
Sleepy head, dreaming of Mickey Mouse
Good night kisses, lifetime supply plus

~~~
Yellowed love letters, my oldest possessions
Scrawled by hand, poetry and lyrics
Film and song, laughter and tears
All those years, hitched for eleven
Folks comin’ and goin’, switching names
Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Puffy, Sean
Marky Mark, Mark Wahlberg, still hot
(Still doing good work, I mean)
~~~

One life, two lives, three lives
So many days, bright, dark, mixed
So much laundry, brights, darks, mixed
Drama in bulk, like Costco shopping

So many memories, some are fading
So much history; growing, bonding, learning
So many pieces, moment to moment
Still, bring on the whole package

From late 20th century to today
Husband must be saintly, I say
Like ol’ Sonny & Cher, Hey,
I got you babe
, and boy…

This gave me goosebumps. We keep dissecting and alluding to the elusiveness of perfection, but sometimes, it’s right here and we don’t even notice it because of the incongruity – the coming together of less than ideal situations and imperfect people can make perfection.

I especially enjoyed these lines:

“Little jam hands, reaching, grabbing, hugging
Parents don’t wear white, good policy”

“Marky Mark, Mark Wahlberg, still hot
(Still doing good work, I mean)”

Like ol’ Sonny & Cher, Hey,
I got you babe, and boy…

Again, goosebumps. :)

Belinda,

This was a very touching poem filled with beautiful imagery. It has a warmth to it….like a contented cat sleeping in the sun.

I also love the perfect 3 +3. That’s not easy to do and you did it very well:~)

Interesting. I don’t think about perfection. I think about improvement, I think about beauty, I think about achievement. But it occurs to me that I somewhere along the way decades ago, I gave up concepts of perfection. And I’m glad. I don’t think I’d care for it much, if I even believed it was definable.

That said, lovely images in these lines.

Thanks for sharing these, Belinda. Very nice!

My personal policy is to always seek excellence, never perfection.

Perfection is the beauty before us.
The beauty of a life lived.
Thank you for reminding me, eloquently!

Nice to see you doing something so different. I really liked the last one about expanding from being a couple to a family, the laundry comparison right through to Sonny and Cher. Very well done Belinda – I’d love to see more of this from you.

Lovely!
Perfection is like chasing a rainbow. I suspect we could accomplish more in life if we gave it up entirely.

Belinda, I love the poem, and I love your take on perfection!

Perfection is like a bright, shiny bauble… until one smears it with their eyes. :P

Funny…I’ve been thinking about perfection over the last couple of days. I have a perfectionist tendency, but more of a a moral perfectionism. Funny thing is, each day I’m faced with my imperfection. I’ve found that facing my imperfection helps me to grow in humility and to be patient with the faults of others. It also helps me to be more compassionate with others as well. My take: perfection is not possible this side of the grave, but we can and must still strive for goodness.

I just keep reading it. Perfection!

Perfection kills life, love, joy, laughter,
just like;
“Parents don’t wear white, good policy”.
