Aung San Suu Kyi Is Free

by Belinda Munoz on November 16, 2010

 aung san suu kyi

Lines on her face
Deeper than before
Fifteen years passed
Since they locked the door

This threat of a woman
Held captive in her home
They cloaked her fiery spirit
Took away her right to roam

Generations of struggles
Human rights atrocities
Myanmar torn apart
Cries for democracy

Aung San Suu Kyi
A symbol of peace
Without a bomb or a gun
Her voice echoed upon release

Freedom to live, the right to be
For too many, blood seeds to sow
For the privileged others, a prize
Never knowing what they owe

Excellent, pointed, political work – not too long, not too short, and not too preachy (as religious and political works usually are in writer’s groups like this).

There is a wonderful older movie about the political situation in Myanmar, and Aung San Suu Kyi called “Beyond Rangoon.” It is a joy to know she has been released!

There is nothing oppressors find more threatening than free thought.
