The thing about choosing to live consciously is once you go down that path, there's no going back. Your conscience won't let you. So you can either do it bitter or happy. I think that part of the burden/gift of gaining awareness and of choosing to live consciously is accepting that we have no control over how others will act; we can simply do our part and hope others will do theirs, too. @Malo, thanks for suggesting a 7th item! You're right. There's wisdom in abundance in the blogosphere; that's a very positive trend. @shmabes, thanks for reading! I thank you and all those who take the time to share their knowledge and inspire others through writing. That should be the 7th item in your list, an increase in the number of people effecting positive change through their blogs. That is not easy to do even if you have the talent! Better late than never? I have some catching up to do. First, I want to congratulate you and thank you for the work you're doing here. Making the choice to live consciously is 99% of the battle and a harder challenge than it may seem on the surface. Along the way we'll make some choices that will bring desirable consequences and others that will bring undesirable ones. I believe it is when we are making these choices while in awareness that change can come about more quickly and with a more lasting effect. Here's to living more consciously! I don't pretend to have the answers to any questions. I do however want to believe that there is an abundance of good in the world that isn’t being reported on the news... @Justin, positive change, we hope. @Fr. Michael, I agree that self-satisfaction leads to emptiness and that is ultimately not what any of us want. The trend of breaking free from materialism is a very good sign that we are seeking a deeper sense of fulfillment -- one that can't be attained from human-made "stuff". @Grey, thanks for stopping by! Great points -- and the plasticity of the brain is an exciting thing in and of itself. There's so much promise knowing what we know now about ourselves that it's hard not to get excited about possibilities for the future. @Tina, glad to hear you like this piece. I wasn't sure what to do or how to feel about celebrity activism at first, but if more of them are following the examples of Bono, Robert Redford, Jackson Browne, etc., and are genuinely participating in important causes, how can that be bad, right? @Ben, thanks for staying up to read this post. I never thought about celebrity activism being a good sign, I guess I am cynical, but you are probably right. I have to say I really love the comments because it shows that all kinds of people are responding to what you are writing about, Belinda. Congratulations once again, and most of all thank you for sharing your thoughts. Talk soon. This is my favorite so far, really got me thinking I must admit. Further, I would add that we as a species (and to a degree, as cultures) are getting better at 'knowing ourselves' and making serious strides forward in understanding the human body, brain, and mind. Our inherent neuroplasticity is at the forefront of what will see us forward through positive change. Thanks for your thoughts and time that go into this blog. Michael Mon, 05 Oct 2009 18:41:22 +0000 https://thehalfwaypoint.net/?p=309#comment-78 I agree that many people are becoming more spiritual, especially young people. Our culture is so materialistic and so focused on immediate gratification; but people who pursue a life based on self-satisfaction are ultimately left feeling empty. I know this is technically not a religious blog, but I'd like to say that I believe people are longing for God and many are coming to realize that. I don't believe humanity can evolve without God.
