Circle of Life

Warmth
is the spark that
lights the match

Breath
is the fuel that
fans the flame

Care
is the kindling that
sustains the fire

Touch
is the salve that
soothes the burn

Time
is the master thief
that leaves
a trail of memories
behind

While we bask in
the glow of
the circle of life.

Yes, this Friday flash 55 was inspired by The Lion King. I was browsing the dvd bins at a local bookstore when I spotted a copy. I saw a live production years ago and thought about how much fun it would be to watch the film with my son. (Husband was less enthused as he has never seen it.)

Anyway, two things I still remember from the story are: “Hakuna Matata” meaning “no worries” and of course, the mega-hit song The Circle of Life. Don’t worry (hakuna matata — wink wink), I didn’t record myself singing my own rendition of it. Instead, I’ve copied the lyrics below. Who knows, someone out there might appreciate the lyrics without hearing them sung.

Circle of Life
Music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high
Through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

It’s the Circle of Life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the Circle
The Circle of Life

Those circles, merging and converging, can not be denied. You do know that while reading the lyrics, I was totally hearing the tune, Belinda :)

I love the form you used here, the way each verse circles back to the one before it. You’ve inspired me.

Belinda,

Beautiful 55 and thanks for sharing the story behind it. My favorite lines…
Touch
is the salve that
soothes the burn
This is so true. Touch, when done well, unites us. I think of a hug…:~)

We saw the live production a few years ago with our daughter and loved it. My husband has tried to get a copy of the DVD for years, but was unable to find one. He actually contacted Disney and they said it was placed in the vault for an indefinite period of time and that eventually they would re-release it. Glad you found a copy.
Love the sentiment of your poem.

OMG, Belinda this is beautiful! It took my breath away. I was reading and my reading sped up near the end as I got lost in your poetry. Wow! You have a lot of talent.
