Years ago, my husband, a constant source of inspiration for me, put together a collaborative album called Twenty Haiku, a multimedia project involving twenty pieces of original haiku, accompanied by original 2D art and seconds-long, one-instrument music expressed on the spot at the time of recording. It was a critical success. I think of this project often when I’m in a mood like today and it always puts the brakes on my tendency to ramble. In this spirit, I offer you twenty of my rainy day haiku:
gentle moment comes
a break after a torrent
silence, sweet and scarce
stillness, dark at dawn
dew drops slide off wintry leaves
roots nourished, thirst quenched
whizzing down byways
giddy toddler in carseat
amazed by pink clouds
solitude at dusk
a moment of awareness
heightened clarity
heart beats, blood pulsates
seven billion people, one
body, mind, spirit
downpour, bring it on
unstoppable rhythmic drops
free carwash to boot
hot and cold collide
forecast of whirly twister
awake and alert
like the weather, life
black and white and foggy grey
rainstorm, then sunshine
wishing for the blue
beating grey fury becomes
multicolored sky
always and never
everything and absolutes
awash in the storm
writing a haiku
a lesson in brevity
one size fits all, not
a leaky ceiling
not unlike a warm embrace
wakes up the senses
longing for blue sky
sulking in a dark corner
comforting sadness
floods, like emotions
heavy and all-consuming
then cleansing follows
thunder rattles that
which lightning illuminates
what remains endures
worries gone haywire
tornado watch expired
neurosis subsides
clammy hands, wet feet
rain boots and coats fail again
mother nature smiles
precipitation
drops on scurrying creatures
soaked, dripping, humbled
what’s artificial
deteriorates in a storm
what’s real blooms and grows
slippery puddles
we all take a spill at times
humor required

I checked out Twenty Haiku – it’s very cool. You’re haiku is terrific. It’s much harder than one might think, but so rewarding when you get just the right words to fall into place. I wrote my thesis about a Zen poet (Gary Snyder) who put together some very interesting haiku. Some of your above poems reminded me of him. Here’s one…
After weeks of watching the roof leak
I fixed it tonight
by moving a single board
Always the last line that makes it sing.
Peace,
David
Belinda — These are wonderful. I enjoyed each and every one of them. I also liked how you laid them out in this post — it made them fun to read.
Thanks for sharing your Haiku and congrats to your husband for his multi-media project. So, much talent in one family is a bit scary, but marvelous too:~) My favorites of your Haiku were these two:
downpour, bring it on
unstoppable rhythmic drops
free carwash to boot
slippery puddles
we all take a spill at times

Belinda — I went to your husband’s site and listened to both videos. I’ve never been into funk music or even pop…I always thought I was a bit too old. The first video, Family Matters, is music poetry — sound, visual and kinesthetic — I couldn’t help but move as I listened:~)
In the other video, I really enjoyed listening to the musicians talk about the music. I loved what your husband said about his music….that he breathes life into it. I will look for his new album when it comes out:~)

My Haiku to you!
Love it, Belinda! Such fun. And we’re on the same wave length again. The rain inspired me too. Your husband’s project sounds amazing; I will have to check out his site.

Fantastic post, I really like your style.
Hi Belinda,
I really liked this especially the way you laid it out on the post. My favorite section was
what’s artificial
deteriorates in a storm
what’s real blooms and grows
So true. Great stuff..
